1000cc vs 1300cc for a first family car — worth the jump?

Budget stretches to a used 1300 or a newer 1000. The 1300 is more comfortable on the motorway and resells easily, but the 1000 is cheaper to run and register. For someone doing mostly city commutes with the occasional intercity trip, is the extra displacement worth the higher running cost and price? Would love to hear from people who've owned both.
