AC not cooling like before — where do I start?

As the weather heats up my AC feels weaker than last year. It still blows cold-ish but not the ice-cold it used to. Before I hand it to a random AC shop and get upsold on a full overhaul, what's the sensible order to check things? Gas top-up, condenser cleaning, cabin filter, or compressor? Trying to avoid paying for parts I don't need.

Start with the cheapest things: clean the condenser (it gets packed with dust and bugs) and replace the cabin filter. Fixed my "weak AC" for almost nothing.

If it lost cooling gradually over a year it is probably a slow gas leak. Get it pressure tested before just topping up, otherwise you will be back in a month.

Do not let them jump straight to compressor. That is the most expensive part and the least likely culprit for a gradual drop.
