How often are you really changing engine oil?

The manual says one interval, the workshop says another, and the internet says something else entirely. For a locally used car in dusty conditions, what interval and what grade are you running? Mineral, semi or fully synthetic? I've been doing 5,000 km on semi-synthetic but wondering if I'm changing it too early and wasting money.
